How Gum Surgery Works in Irvine, CA

Watch the LANAP® Laser Procedure

Why Choose Laser Periodontal Surgery

• Laser periodontal surgery is a minimally invasive, scalpel free procedure.
• Bacteria are killed on contact without harming healthy gum tissue.
• LANAP® reduces up to 90 percent of the inflammation for a more comfortable experience and faster recovery time.
• Laser may stop tooth loss by encouraging new bone development around teeth.
• No stitches are required, as laser periodontal surgery permits soft tissue to reconnect to the tooth surfaces naturally.

The Stages of LANAP®

The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) is the modern, minimally invasive periodontal surgery preferred by leading periodontists and patients who have moderate to severe periodontal disease. Laser gum treatment in Santa Ana, CA with Dr. Todd E. Miller and Dr. Steven J. Bounds is extremely gentle and it provides new health advantages that older methods do not.

How LANAP® Works

Diagram of gum surgery in Irvine, CA

1. The first step is to assess gum pocket depths and tissue damage with a periodontal measuring tool.

2. Getting rid of the bacteria that is causing damage to the connective tissue is accomplished using the PerioLase® MVP-7™, one of the top, FDA cleared dental lasers of choice among doctors who perform laser periodontal surgery. This tool allows Dr. Miller and Dr. Bounds to pinpoint and immediately remove the bacteria without any cutting for a procedure that is more efficient, minimally painful, and much less damaging to the gum line.

3. Breaking up and eliminating tartar buildup around the teeth is accomplished using ultrasonic scalers along with the PerioLase®, which can be effective at denaturing the tartar for easier removal.

4. The next step involves using the laser to clot blood around the teeth. The clots are minimal in size but extremely effective at blocking new germs from entering the gums while they heal.

5. Reconnecting healthy gum tissue to the root surfaces of the teeth is accomplished with a compression technique that encourages a natural reattachment, with no stiches required.

6. To complete laser periodontal surgery, a bite adjustment is necessary to make sure the teeth are well aligned and comfortable. Patients with bone loss are particularly vulnerable, making this last step especially important.
